What is Permaculture?

“Permaculture is a holistic design philosophy described as the art and science of creating community ecosystems in which plants, animals, human beings, and all forms of ecological diversity interact to produce a prolific, ecologically-sound, and regenerative system that can support itself and life indefinitely.

The focus of permaculture is to design and establish societal systems that provide for humanity’s material and non-material needs including food, water, shelter, energy, and health in a way that is symbiotic and synergistic with the Earth’s natural ecosystems. ”     2012 Northern CA Permaculture Convergence website

3 year apple guild

Ananda Permaculture is a 3 acre, 4-year-old Food Forest in the making, started in the fall of 2008.

There are hundreds of fruit and nut trees and various berries and medicinal herbs planted to date, with more being added each year. We communicate and work with the Devas of field and forest, earth, air, and water, and all of the plant communities. We endeavor to go forward experience God’s presence in all creation.

What is Ananda Permaculture?

Ananda Permaculture is an attitude, an approach which merges the Divine and practical.  It recognizes that Divine consciousness is the underlying reality of all creation.  In addition to observing and understanding the natural processes, we communicate with Spirit in Nature.

We seek to invoke the Divine consciousness and infuse it in into Permaculture and other sustainable gardening practices to manifest the highest potential in each of our daily activities bath in the garden and in the rest of our lives.

Permaculture at Ananda draws on the Permaculture principles of Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, the practices of Sepp Holtzer (the Austrian Permaculturist at 5,000 feet elevation in the Alps), Rudolph Steiner’s Biodynamic practices, Fukuoka’s Japanese Natural Farming methods (as portrayed in his books “One Straw Revolution” and “The Natural Way of Farming”) and Machaelle Small Wright’s Co-Creative Science ideas (Co-Creating with Nature Intelligence).

The Ananda Permaculture project is part of Ananda Village, which is a 40 year old, intentional community in the Sierra Nevada foothills and located on over 700 acres, based on the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda.

The vision and manifestation of Ananda’s Permaculture gardens has been facilitated by Alex and Devadasi Forrester, certified Permaculture designers of 12 years. These gardens have been made possible by the volunteer efforts and donations of hundreds of people interested in creating an alternative, sustainable food system.

The Forresters have studied and seek to integrate appropriate sustainable farming practices drawn from teachers worldwide.

What We Offer

Ananda Permacutlure offers an ongoing Internship opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in the manifestation of sustainable food systems for generations to come, as well as pursue the deepening of their spiritual path through yoga and meditation.
